An online AI graduate certificate is a short run of graduate courses, usually four, that you can finish in about a year. We list 30 of them. Prices run from $5,000 at the University of Texas at Austin to $25,452 for two Carnegie Mellon University certificates. Many credits count toward a master's, so a certificate can also be a low-risk first step.

How We Chose These Programs
Every certificate here is a graduate or post-baccalaureate credential delivered online, and we confirmed it on the school's own pages. Certificates are ranked only against other certificates, looking at cost, graduation rate, online flexibility, depth and track record.
Where a school prints only a total, we use the total. The details are on the methodology page. A school with several certificates gets one card for each, so a card's title and its note matter more than the school name.
- Graduate or post-baccalaureate certificate, delivered online
- Cost, credits and format confirmed on the school's own pages in September 2026
- Scored on cost, outcomes, flexibility and program depth, then ranked among certificates
Scores are the weighted sum of five factors (Cost 30%, Outcomes 25%, Online Flexibility 20%, Program Depth 10%, Track Record 15%), version 1.0. The methodology page shows the rubric for each factor.

Pick the Certificate That Matches Your Starting Point
Certificates in AI are not one product. They split into three groups, and the right one depends on what you can already do.
The first group assumes you code. Carnegie Mellon's Machine Learning and Data Science and Generative AI certificates, Indiana University's certificate and the University of North Texas certificate expect a STEM or programming background. UNT says its certificate is designed for students from STEM-based backgrounds.
The second group is for people who manage AI rather than build it. Carnegie Mellon's Managing AI Systems asks for at least five years as a manager, policymaker or nonprofit leader and no technical background. Rochester's AI in Business certificate has a pathway with no coding required, and Brandeis lists no technical prerequisites for its AI-Driven Leadership certificate.
The third group teaches the basics from scratch. Carnegie Mellon's Foundational AI and ML for Business accepts a bachelor's degree in any subject and doesn't require math or programming, though it may recommend preparatory work.
Read the admissions line on each card before you read the price.
Check Whether the Credits Count Toward a Master's
The strongest reason to start with a certificate is that the credits may carry forward. If you later decide you want the degree, you've already paid for part of it.
The University of Texas at Austin says credits earned in its certificate can be transferred into the online MS in AI. Johns Hopkins says all certificate courses apply to the master's degree if you continue. UNT applies all 12 certificate hours toward its 33-hour online master's. Indiana University points to its Online MS in Data Science, and Rochester names its online MS in Business Analytics and Applied AI.
Brandeis ties its three certificates to different master's programs, and each needs six more courses. Penn State describes stackable certificates toward its AI master's pathway, with up to three related certificates earned along the way.
Ask the admissions office to confirm in writing which degree accepts your certificate and whether a minimum grade applies. When you're ready to compare degrees, start with our online master's in AI list.
Plan for Total Cost and Aid Before You Apply
Certificates cost less than a degree, but the range is wide. UT Austin charges $5,000. Saint Louis University lists $7,290 for 9 credits at $810 per credit, and Rochester lists $7,500. Penn State's 9-credit certificates come to $9,432 or $9,801, and its 12-credit AI Engineering certificate is $12,576.
Brandeis charges $1,220 per credit, or $14,640 for 12 credits. Harvard lists $14,320 for four courses, Carnegie Mellon's Foundational AI and ML for Business is $16,968, and Stanford prints a range of $21,086 to $25,952 depending on which four courses you choose.
Aid works differently too. Penn State states that certificate students are nondegree and not eligible for federal student aid. Don't assume the same for other schools, and don't assume the opposite. Ask.
Brandeis offers a 15% tuition discount to military veterans, active-duty personnel and their spouses. Your employer may also reimburse tuition, which is worth asking HR before you pay out of pocket. If price is your main filter, our cheapest online AI degrees list shows how degree prices compare.
Match the Schedule to Your Week
Format changes how hard a certificate feels more than the credit count does.
Rochester's certificate is synchronous, with live sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in seven-week terms. Stanford's is also synchronous. Carnegie Mellon, Harvard and several others mix live and recorded sessions. Brandeis' Software Engineering with AI and the University of Cincinnati's certificate are asynchronous, so you can work around your job.
Start dates matter too. Indiana University offers five starts a year with 8-week and 16-week courses, and Cincinnati offers three. UCF's AI in Health certificate begins in Fall 2026 and is open to students from nursing, medicine, public health, computer science and health informatics.
If you can't commit to fixed evening hours, rule out the synchronous options first.
