How We Chose These Programs

A program is on this list when its title or a named concentration points to generative AI, large language models or natural language processing, and it's delivered online. We confirmed cost, credits and format on each school's own pages.

Programs are scored on cost, graduation rate, online flexibility, depth and track record, and they're ranked only against others at the same level. Certificates are never ranked against master's degrees. The full scoring rules are on our methodology page.

  • Generative, large language model, natural language or NLP in the program title or a concentration
  • Delivered online, with cost, credits and format confirmed on the school's own pages
  • Ranked by our program score within each degree level; certificates are ranked only against other certificates

Scores are the weighted sum of five factors (Cost 30%, Outcomes 25%, Online Flexibility 20%, Program Depth 10%, Track Record 15%), version 1.0. The methodology page shows the rubric for each factor.

Decide Between a Certificate and a Master's

The two levels on this list answer different questions. A certificate is three or four courses on one topic. A master's is ten courses across the whole field, with generative AI as one piece of it.

The certificates here are narrow on purpose. Carnegie Mellon's runs about 12 months and covers large language model systems and multimodal machine learning. Rochester's is three 2.5-credit courses over seven-week terms. Penn State's Natural Language Processing certificate is 9 credits.

The master's degrees are 30 credits. Penn State's Applied and Generative AI Option is one of two options in its Master of Artificial Intelligence, and Johns Hopkins offers a Large Language Models focus area.

If you want one skill for your current job, start with a certificate. If you want a new job title, a master's is the likelier fit. Our online master's in AI list compares the full degrees.

Check the Coding and Math Bar Before You Apply

Generative AI programs vary more on prerequisites than almost any other part of the field.

Carnegie Mellon's certificate is aimed at experienced computer scientists and engineers with a strong background in computer science and machine learning. Johns Hopkins says applicants likely hold a degree in engineering or computer science, and it lists calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics, and Python. It also notes provisional admission is available.

Rochester takes a different approach. Its AI in Business certificate has three pathways, and one needs no coding. Its Generative AI Using Python pathway does, so pick the pathway that matches what you can do today.

Read the admissions line on each card first. A program that suits your résumé saves you an application fee and a rejection.

Count the Full Cost and the Aid You Can Use

Sticker prices on this list span a wide range, and the totals aren't built the same way.

Rochester lists $7,500 for the certificate with no application fee. Carnegie Mellon lists $25,452 for three courses, plus course fees of $150 to $300 each, including AWS usage. Alumni can get a scholarship worth up to 20% of certificate tuition.

Johns Hopkins charges $5,620 per course for 2026-2027 after the Dean's fellowship, or $6,870 before it. Ten courses taken within one academic year total $56,200. Penn State charges $1,089 per credit, or $13,062 per semester at 12 or more credits, and says the 2027-28 rate is higher.

Aid is the catch. Penn State states that certificate students are nondegree and not eligible for federal student aid. Ask each school about aid and employer tuition help before you plan around a loan.

Match the Class Format to Your Week

Format decides whether you can keep your job while you study.

Rochester's certificate is synchronous, with live sessions Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in seven-week terms. Carnegie Mellon holds live online classes weekly after work hours, and it starts in spring and fall only, so you get two starts a year.

Penn State runs three semesters a year, spring, summer and fall, with 12-week terms for its AI master's options. That gives you three chances a year to begin. Its certificate is described as a stackable credential embedded in a Penn State master's degree, and the school says you can earn up to three related certificates along the way.

If evenings are already full, rule out the live-session programs first.
