How We Chose These Programs
We start with online master's programs in artificial intelligence, machine learning and applied AI that we could confirm on the school's own pages. We rank them on cost, graduation rate, online flexibility, program depth and track record, and we use the published online rate per credit.
When a school publishes only a total, we use the total and say so on the card. Every card note comes from the program's own page. The details are on our methodology page.
- Master's level, delivered online
- Per-credit price, credit count, GRE policy and onsite requirements confirmed on school pages
- Ranked by our program score among master's programs
Scores are the weighted sum of five factors (Cost 30%, Outcomes 25%, Online Flexibility 20%, Program Depth 10%, Track Record 15%), version 1.0. The methodology page shows the rubric for each factor.

Why it ranks #31: it offers 4 concentrations and a thesis option, and its school awards about 473 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (more than 42 of 43 other programs on this list), but its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 41% (lower than 43 of 45 other programs on this list).
Who It FitsCareer changers with no engineering or computer science degree can enroll here, and the first semester works as an onramp. You can choose a nine-course project or an eight-course thesis, then aim the degree with Deep Learning and Computer Vision, Robotics and Automation, or two other concentrations. How to Compare Price Across These Programs
Per-credit rates look clean, but credit counts run from 30 to 48 on this list, so the rate alone misleads. Grand Canyon University's $610 looks like a bargain next to Saint Louis University's $810. Grand Canyon needs 46 credits, though, so you'd pay $28,060, and Saint Louis University's 30 credits come to $24,300.
Start with the total. Texas comes to $9,990 and Colorado Boulder to $15,750, which is the lowest pair here. Colorado Boulder runs through Coursera and has six starts a year. Public programs in the middle include West Virginia at $24,150 and Florida Atlantic at $24,000.
The top end is a different category. Duke totals $76,650, Columbia $81,000, and Northeastern's Applied AI Connect $71,079. Duke's price comes with two required campus residencies, so add travel. Ask what the higher price buys you before you commit.
A published total is not always the final bill, so check each school's fee page before you apply.
Admission Without a Computer Science Degree
Most programs here want a technical bachelor's and some programming. Texas admits applicants typically from computer science, engineering, mathematics or a related field. West Virginia asks for a computer science or closely related degree with a 3.0 GPA. If that's you, the list is wide open.
If it isn't, a few programs are built for you. Saint Louis University requires no prior STEM degree and teaches the technical foundations inside the program. Boston University's AI in Business degree needs no coding background and focuses on leading AI projects. Georgetown, Cincinnati and Bridgeport accept a bachelor's in any field.
Colorado Boulder takes a different route. You pass a three-course pathway with a B or better in each, and no bachelor's degree or traditional application is required.
Northeastern sends applicants without an engineering or technology background to its Connect version, which lists $71,079 against $30,500 for the standard program.
A certificate can also open the door. New Jersey Institute of Technology guarantees admission to its master's when you finish its graduate certificate with a 3.0 or higher. Browse the online AI certificate programs to compare options.
Choosing Between Programs at the Same School
Boston University's five programs are different degrees. The Master of Science in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence and the one in Software Engineering for Artificial Intelligence are technical, and both run 16 months for 30 credits at $25,000.
Enterprise AI is also 30 credits at $25,000 and doesn't require the GRE. AI in Business is 32 credits at $25,000 and needs no coding.
The Master of Education in AI and Education is $30,000, and its capstone focuses on applying AI in learning.
Penn State offers two options for one degree, AI Engineering and Applied and Generative AI. Both are 30 credits at $32,670, so choose by the courses you want.
Northeastern lists the standard Applied AI program and the Connect version. Saint Louis University has Applied AI and Decision Analytics, plus AI in Medicine, which is designed for clinicians. Open each program page and match the admissions line to your background.
The GRE and Other Admission Requirements
Eleven of the 45 programs say the GRE isn't required, and we list them on the no-GRE master's in AI page. Many of the rest don't mention it at all, which is not the same as a waiver, so ask the admissions office.
George Washington lists GRE scores as optional. 0 or your degree is in another field.
GPA matters more often. Purdue, West Virginia and NJIT ask for a 3.0 or an equivalent, and DePaul's minimum is 2.5. Montclair State asks you to finish an online statistics module of 25 to 30 hours before you start. Prerequisites in calculus, statistics and programming appear on many pages, so check your transcript before you apply.
