Method

How We Chose These Programs

A program is on this list only if the school's own program or catalog page states a thesis, dissertation or research option. We ranked the eight that qualify on the same measures we use on every list: cost, outcomes, flexibility, depth and track record.

Each program was checked against the school's official pages. The details are on our methodology page. Some thesis options are required and some are optional, so each card says which one applies.

  • A thesis option stated on the school's program page
  • Master's or doctoral level, delivered online
  • Ranked by our program score within each degree level

Scores are the weighted sum of five factors (Cost 30%, Outcomes 25%, Online Flexibility 20%, Program Depth 10%, Track Record 15%), version 1.0. The methodology page shows the rubric for each factor.

Master's

Online Master's Degrees Ranked

6 programs, ranked against each other.

  1. 1

    Capitol Technology University

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Maryland

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #1: it offers a thesis option and an internship, and it charges $665 per credit (tied for the lowest among master's programs on this list).

    Thesis option

Thesis-first is the whole design here. The 36 credits build toward a written thesis and an oral defense, so you spend more of the degree on your own research question than on classes. It runs $665 per credit, $23,940 in tuition, before the $55 technology fee. Pick it if you want the longer research runway; the six extra credits cost real money.

  2. 2

    Capitol Technology University

Master of Research (MRes) in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Maryland

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #2: it offers a thesis option and it charges $665 per credit (tied for the lowest among master's programs on this list).

    Thesis option

Two courses, MRS 700 and MRS 710, teach graduate research methods before you present and defend a master's dissertation. That's a clear path if you've never written research and want to learn how. At 30 credits and $665 each, tuition is $19,950. Capitol aims it at experienced professionals with an AI-related bachelor's, so an unrelated degree is a poor fit.

  3. 3

    University of Bridgeport

Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Connecticut

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #3: it offers a thesis option and 4 concentrations, and its school awards about 473 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the most among master's programs on this list), but its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 41% (the lowest among master's programs on this list).

    Thesis option

Bridgeport treats the thesis as a choice, not a requirement. You can take the thesis option for eight courses, including CPSC 598, or the master's project for nine. That lets you test research without committing your whole degree to it. The cost is $1,100 per credit, or $33,000 for 30 credits, and a separate $510 program fee applies.

  4. 4

    New Jersey Institute of Technology

    Online M.S. in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in New Jersey

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #4: it offers a thesis option and a capstone, and its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 73% (the highest among master's programs on this list), but at $1,284 per credit it costs more than 3 of 4 other master's programs on this list.

    Thesis option

NJIT lets you write the thesis after you've done a project. The capstone is a master's project, DS 700B, and a thesis (DS 701B) with a tenure-track faculty advisor can follow it. So you can keep the research door open without betting on it early. It's a 30-credit degree at $1,284 each, $38,520 total, and you'll want a STEM background to get in.

  5. 5

    DePaul University

Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Illinois

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #5: it offers a thesis option, an internship, and a capstone, and it is fully online with 4 starts a year, but its price of $1,003 per quarter credit is the highest among master's programs on this list.

    Thesis option

Thesis here is one door among several. DePaul's requirements let you finish with a capstone, master's research, a graduate internship, or a master's thesis, so you decide how research-heavy to go. It's the longest degree in this group at 48 quarter credits, $1,003 each, for $48,144 before the comprehensive fee. Worth it if you want options, not a fixed research track.

  6. 6

    University of Michigan-Dearborn

    Artificial Intelligence, MS

    School based in Michigan

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #6: it offers a thesis option and 4 concentrations, and its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 58% (higher than 3 of 5 other master's programs on this list).

    Thesis option

Michigan-Dearborn describes coursework, project and thesis options, so you shape how much research goes into the 30 credits. You can finish online, on campus or both, with evening classes. The GRE isn't required. If a thesis is your goal, confirm early how a part-time online student gets an advisor, and ask what you'll actually pay, since the posted tuition figures are general graduate rates.

Online Doctoral Degrees Ranked

2 programs, ranked against each other.

  1. 1

    Capitol Technology University

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Maryland

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit
    Thesis option

Consider this when the thesis you want is a doctoral dissertation. It's a research-based, European-model PhD with a supervisor assigned almost right away, and an external expert assesses your oral defense. Typical time is three years, with two as a minimum. Sixty credits at $980 come to $58,800. It's a big commitment compared with every master's here.

    Capitol Technology University

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Machine Learning

    School based in Maryland

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit
    Thesis option

Machine learning researchers get a way to skip the single big dissertation: you can submit three accepted journal articles instead of a thesis. Courses such as MCL 810 teach research methods first. It's 60 credits at $980, $58,800, and Capitol says credits can run past 60 if your research drags. That open-ended length is the risk to plan around.

Know Whether the Thesis Is Required or Optional

This is the first thing to sort out, because it changes what you're signing up for. At Capitol, the MPhil ends in a written master's thesis and an oral defense, and the MRes ends in a master's dissertation you present and defend. Neither has a non-thesis route.

At other schools, the thesis is a choice. Bridgeport offers a project route with 9 courses or a thesis route with 8. NJIT lets you complete a master's project (DS 700B) or a thesis (DS 701B). Michigan-Dearborn describes coursework, project and thesis options.

Plan Your Thesis Before You Enroll

A thesis is a research project with an advisor, and some schools make you line that up. NJIT says a thesis must relate to AI and needs approval from the program director and a thesis advisor. Its catalog also describes a master's project followed by a master's thesis over two semesters, with a tenure-track faculty member.

Before you apply, email the program and ask who supervises online thesis students, how often you'd meet, and whether you can start a thesis in your first year. DePaul lists a capstone, Master's Research or graduate internship as the options for its final requirement, and its requirements page also says you may complete a Master's Thesis. Ask how that works for online students.

Check Admissions and Background First

These programs differ a lot on who gets in. Bridgeport accepts learners from any field with a bachelor's degree, and says no engineering or computer science background is required. 0 GPA, a computing or STEM bachelor's, and coursework in calculus, programming, data structures, probability and statistics, and linear algebra.

0 GPA and prior programming, math and statistics. 5 GPA and Calculus 1 and 2.

Capitol's MRes is designed for experienced professionals with an AI-related undergraduate degree. Its Machine Learning PhD is for current or experienced professionals in machine learning, AI, computer science or data analytics.

Compare the Real Cost and the Pace

Capitol charges $665 per credit for the MPhil (36 credits) and MRes (30 credits), plus a $55 per credit technology fee. Its PhDs charge $980 per credit for 60 credits, and the Machine Learning PhD notes credits may exceed 60 depending on research time.

Bridgeport lists $1,100 per credit for 30 credits, plus a $510 Computer Science program fee and a $25 per credit textbook fee. NJIT charges $1,284 per credit for 30 credits. DePaul charges $1,003 per credit for 48 credits.

On pace, Bridgeport says as few as 2 years, and NJIT lists 2 years part time. Capitol's AI PhD takes a minimum of two years and typically three. Michigan-Dearborn posts a general graduate rate rather than an online price, so ask for the online figure.
