Fourteen online AI programs state that an internship, co-op or practicum is part of the degree: 5 bachelor's, 8 master's and 1 associate. At most schools the work experience is an option, not a requirement. It often replaces a capstone or electives, so the real question is whether the placement is something you can actually arrange.

Method

How We Chose These Programs

A program qualifies when its own page states an internship, co-op or practicum, whether required or optional. We confirm the wording on the school's program page, then rank the qualifying programs by level on the same measures used across the site: cost, outcomes, flexibility, depth and track record.

A program that only says it has career services does not qualify. Sponsored status never changes a ranking. The details are on our methodology page.

  • An internship or practicum named on the school's program page
  • Noted as required or optional for each program
  • Ranked by our program score within each degree level; certificates are ranked only against other certificates

Scores are the weighted sum of five factors (Cost 30%, Outcomes 25%, Online Flexibility 20%, Program Depth 10%, Track Record 15%), version 1.0. The methodology page shows the rubric for each factor.

Bachelor's

Online Bachelor's Degrees Ranked

5 programs, ranked against each other.

  1. 1

    Indiana University-Bloomington

Online Bachelor of Arts in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Indiana

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #1: it offers an internship and a thesis option; its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 80% (the highest among bachelor's programs on this list); and its school awards about 443 bachelor's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the most among bachelor's programs on this list).

    Internship

Six of the 120 credit hours can go to an internship, a thesis or a project, so work experience counts toward graduation instead of piling on top of it. That fits a student who wants a Bloomington degree and some real-world time before applying for jobs. The catch is that the internship is one of three choices, not a requirement.

  2. 2

    Indiana University-Indianapolis

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Indiana

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #2: it offers an internship and its school awards about 173 bachelor's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS.

    Internship

Here the internship means working on AI-related projects with industry partners, and you can do it while enrolled in the online version of a degree that is also taught on campus. It suits a working adult who wants both a bachelor's and a project to point to. The page calls the internship an option, so ask how placements get arranged for distance students.

  3. 3

    The University of Tennessee-Knoxville

Online Bachelor of Science in Applied Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Tennessee

    • Fully Online
    • Asynchronous
    • Public

Why it ranks #3: it offers an internship, and it is fully online and asynchronous with 3 starts a year.

    Internship

Tennessee lists for-credit internship opportunities inside a fully asynchronous degree, so you can fit work experience around a job instead of quitting it. In-state students pay $490 per credit, out-of-state $565, over 120 credits. Choose it if you want credit for your experience. Ask which employers and how many hours past students have worked.

  4. 4

    Angelo State University

Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence (Online Option)

    School based in Texas

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #4: it offers an internship and a capstone, and it is fully online.

    Internship

Angelo State names its internship sites, which most programs on this list don't. They include the on-campus Regional Security Operations Center and Texas DIR Data Center, plus off-campus placements at Dell Technologies and the NSA. That points to security-minded AI students, especially Texans. Ask whether online students can reach the on-campus sites, and confirm the price and credit total with admissions.

    University of Advancing Technology

    Artificial Intelligence (B.S.)

    School based in Arizona

    • Fully Online
    • Private for-profit

Why it ranks #5: it offers an internship, and it is fully online with 7.5- and 15-week terms, but its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 35% (the lowest among bachelor's programs on this list).

    Internship

UAT folds internships, community projects and apprenticeship experiences into the degree, so there are several ways to earn experience, not one. It's built for someone who wants a technology-only school and flexible classes, taught in 7.5-week modules. The warning sign is a 35% federal graduation rate, so ask how advisors help students finish and how internships actually get arranged online.

Master's

Online Master's Degrees Ranked

8 programs, ranked against each other.

  1. 1

    Capitol Technology University

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Maryland

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #1: it offers an internship and a thesis option, and it charges $665 per credit (the lowest among master's programs on this list).

    Internship

Capitol links this research master's to internship and mentoring opportunities through its AI Center of Excellence, and industry partners support that center. You'd pay $665 per credit across 36 credits, $23,940 before the $55 per-credit fee. Pick it if mentoring matters more to you than a placement. A written thesis and oral defense are required, so expect research work, not just practice.

  2. 2

    Texas A&M University-College Station

Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (Distance)

    School based in Texas

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #2: it offers an internship, its school awards about 171 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the most among master's programs on this list), and its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 84% (higher than 5 of 6 other master's programs on this list).

    Internship

Treat this as the self-directed choice on the list. Texas A&M calls internships optional and mentions only CSCE 684, which international students on curricular practical training register for. You'd arrange experience yourself while taking 30 credits entirely at a distance. It fits a student who already has an employer or a lead. No fixed price is printed, so use the tuition calculator.

  3. 3

    Saint Louis University

    Artificial Intelligence in Medicine

    School based in Missouri

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #3: it offers an internship and a capstone, and its school awards about 157 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (more than 5 of 6 other master's programs on this list).

    Internship

Clinicians can finish this degree with a Graduate Internship (AIM 5910) in place of the Capstone Experience (AIM 5960), which lets a nurse or physician apply AI inside a health setting. No computer science background is required. The trade-off is that the internship replaces the capstone, so you choose one. The clinical focus also means the experience won't transfer neatly to general software roles.

  4. 4

    Drexel University

Online Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

    School based in Pennsylvania

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #4: it offers an internship, 2 concentrations, and a capstone, and it is fully online with 10-week terms and 4 starts a year, but at $1,400 per quarter credit it costs more than 3 of 4 other master's programs on this list.

    Internship

Drexel offers an optional co-op experience, listed as COOP 500, on top of its capstone courses. That makes it a fit for software engineers who want industry time on a resume, not simply coursework. The price is the drawback. At $1,400 per quarter credit, 45 credits come to $63,000 before fees, and the co-op isn't guaranteed or required.

    Duke University

Master of Engineering in Artificial Intelligence for Product Innovation (Online)

    School based in North Carolina

    • Online With Campus Requirements
    • Live Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #5: it offers an internship and a capstone, and its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 97% (the highest among master's programs on this list), but its price of $2,555 per credit is the highest among master's programs on this list.

    Internship

Duke pairs a summer internship or industry project with a capstone built around a corporate partner's real opportunity, and internship courses carry no tuition. That suits a working engineer who wants a sponsor-backed project. Cost and travel are the downsides. At $2,555 per credit, 30 credits come to $76,650, and two residencies on the Duke campus are required.

  6. 6

    City University of Seattle

Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (MSAI)

    School based in Washington

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #6: it offers an internship and a capstone, and it charges $775 per quarter credit (lower than 3 of 4 other master's programs on this list), but its school awards about 43 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (fewer than 4 of 6 other master's programs on this list).

    Internship

If you want real work experience without a heavy research thesis, this is a clean route. The optional AI 680 internship is three credits and replaces electives, and the capstone is a separate three-credit project. It suits career changers who need a résumé line. Plan on the pace, though, because courses run 10 weeks and the credit total depends on your prep.

    DePaul University

Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Illinois

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #7: it offers an internship, a thesis option, and a capstone, and it is fully online with 4 starts a year, but its school awards about 10 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (fewer than 5 of 6 other master's programs on this list).

    Internship

DePaul lets you pick the internship as your finish line. The optional graduate internship, CSC 697, carries four credit hours and counts as the capstone, so you can skip the research track entirely. It fits someone already comfortable with calculus who wants an employer on the record. Expect a price tag near $48,144 in tuition for the 48 credits.

    Montclair State University

M.S. in Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence

    School based in New Jersey

    • Online With Campus Requirements
    • Public

Why it ranks #8: it offers an internship and a capstone, but its school awards 6 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the fewest among master's programs on this list).

    Internship

Montclair gives you two experience options at the end: an analytics capstone or INFO 591, an analytics internship. The online pathway also embeds a practicum solving data problems for real organizations. That makes it a strong match for analysts who want applied business work on a transcript. The cost is an in-person 3-5 day domestic trip and a fall-only start.

Read the Fine Print on What Counts as an Internship

The word covers very different things. Duke offers a summer internship or an industry project, and says internship courses carry no tuition. Montclair State requires a culminating experience of either an analytics capstone or an analytics internship, with a practicum built into the online pathway. Drexel lists an optional co-op, COOP 500.

Many schools use the internship as a substitute. Saint Louis University offers a Graduate Internship, AIM 5910, as an alternative to its capstone. DePaul lets you choose a capstone, master's research or a graduate internship. City University of Seattle puts its AI 680 internship in place of electives, after three CS 650 seminar courses that prepare you for it.

Before you apply, ask whether the school finds the placement or you do. Angelo State and Capitol Technology describe partners and industry contacts. Most other pages say only that an option exists.

Plan Around Credits, Timing and Who Pays You

An internship takes real hours, and your own job may not make room for them. Indiana Bloomington's 6 credit hours can go to an internship, a thesis or a project, so you can pick whichever fits your schedule. DePaul's graduate internship is 4 credit hours, and City University of Seattle's is 3.

Texas A&M is a useful example of a rule you would miss without reading closely. Internships there are optional, and its page says domestic students do not need to register when they are on one. International students on curricular practical training register for CSCE 684.

If you already work in AI-adjacent roles, ask whether your current employer can host the project. Some schools accept it, and some do not, and the program page rarely says. Email the admissions office and keep the answer in writing.

Match the Level to the Experience You Need

Bachelor's students get the most structured options here. Tennessee offers for-credit internships, Indiana Indianapolis lets you work on AI projects with industry partners, and University of Advancing Technology says students complete internships, community projects and apprenticeships.

Master's students usually already work, so the value is a switch of field or employer. Saint Louis University's AI in Medicine degree is built for clinicians and needs no computer science background, which makes its internship a way into health care AI. Drexel expects a strong computer science background, and Duke is designed for people with a technical or scientific background.

The lone associate program, Wayne Community College, offers optional work-based learning courses, WBL 110 or WBL 111, as the major elective. It costs $76 per semester hour in state and $268 out of state, plus fees, so it is the cheapest place to try structured work experience.
