Online AI degree programs now run from associate degrees to doctorates, and the right one depends on your level, budget and background. Our list covers online programs at the master's, bachelor's, doctoral and associate levels. Prices run from $268 to $2,700 per credit, so what you pay depends far more on the school than on the subject.

How We Chose These Programs
We ranked every online AI program in our database on cost per credit, graduation rate at the school, online flexibility, program depth and track record. Programs are ranked against others at the same level, so a bachelor's isn't compared with a doctorate. We only include programs titled for AI or machine learning, taken from the school's own pages. Our full methodology explains each measure in detail.
- Delivered fully online, online with limited campus requirements, or as an online degree-completion program
- Cost, credits, format and admissions confirmed on the school's own pages in September 2026
- Scored on cost, outcomes, flexibility and program depth, then ranked within degree level
Scores are the weighted sum of five factors (Cost 30%, Outcomes 25%, Online Flexibility 20%, Program Depth 10%, Track Record 15%), version 1.0. The methodology page shows the rubric for each factor.

Who It FitsPick this if you work in healthcare and want AI for clinical decisions, not a general degree. Saint Louis University asks for an application, transcripts and a resume, with no GRE and no computer science or advanced math background. It's 30 credits fully online, and courses include Reinforcement Learning for Clinical Decision Making. The trade-off is focus: it's tuned to medicine, so a software career needs a broader program.

64.6- Fully Online
- Private for-profit
Why it ranks #14: it offers a capstone and it is fully online, but its school awards 6 bachelor's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (fewer than 10 of 12 other bachelor's programs on this list).
Who It FitsSouth College makes sense when you want computer science first and an AI concentration second, from a school accredited by SACSCOC. It ends with two capstone courses where you evaluate a business problem and build a solution. The warning is size: 184.5 credits is far above a 120-credit bachelor's, and no tuition is published, so get the full cost in writing.

Who It FitsCapitol's doctorate fits a professional with a master's and one specific AI research question. It's 60 credits at $980 each, about $58,800, fully online with no residencies. You get a supervisor almost immediately and typically take three years. The trade-off is independence: expect a research dissertation defended orally, not a cohort course sequence.

How to Pick a Level Before You Pick a School
Start with what you already hold. A bachelor's in computer science, engineering or math opens nearly every master's here. The University of Texas at Austin asks for that kind of background, and Johns Hopkins expects calculus, linear algebra, probability, statistics and Python.
If your degree is in another field, look at programs built for you. Saint Louis University says no prior STEM degree is required and teaches the technical foundations inside the program. Boston University's AI in Business master's requires no coding background.
If you don't have a bachelor's yet, the list has 14 bachelor's programs and one associate degree. Wayne Community College's associate degree is 65 credits at $268 per credit out of state, and the college says it's North Carolina's first associate degree specializing in AI. The only doctorates are two at Capitol Technology University, at $980 per credit.
What an Online AI Degree Really Costs
The spread is wide. Among master's programs that publish a total, tuition runs from $9,990 at the University of Texas at Austin to $81,000 at Columbia. Duke's engineering master's lists $2,555 per credit, which comes to $76,650, and Johns Hopkins totals $56,200 for ten courses taken in one academic year.
A lower total isn't always a lesser degree. University of Colorado Boulder's master's totals $15,750 through Coursera, with a performance-based admission that needs no traditional application. Boston University charges $25,000 for four of its master's degrees.
Always ask for fees. Several schools say extra charges apply, and Northeastern's figures exclude fees. Compare programs on total tuition for the credits you'll take, not on a single course price.
Check the Format, Pace and On-Campus Requirements
Fully online doesn't always mean fully flexible. Duke's online master's requires two residencies on its campus, and Montclair State's program includes a three to five day domestic trip. Both are worth knowing about before you apply.
Pace varies too. Purdue says one to two years, full time or part time. Northeastern's applied AI master's takes 12 to 20 months. Boston University says as little as 16 months and allows up to six years. Johns Hopkins gives you five years to finish ten courses.
If you work full time, favor asynchronous courses and a generous time limit. Penn's courses are asynchronous, and its schedule runs from 16 months full time to three years part time.
