How We Chose These Programs

A program is on this list only if its own admissions page says the GRE isn't required, or says it's waived under stated conditions. We ranked the 11 programs that qualify on the same measures we use on every list: cost, outcomes, flexibility, depth and track record.

Each program was checked against the school's official page. The details are on our methodology page. We list the waiver conditions in each card, because a waiver that depends on your GPA or degree isn't the same as no requirement.

  • GRE policy confirmed on the school's admissions page
  • Waiver conditions noted for each program
  • Ranked by our program score among master's programs

Scores are the weighted sum of five factors (Cost 30%, Outcomes 25%, Online Flexibility 20%, Program Depth 10%, Track Record 15%), version 1.0. The methodology page shows the rubric for each factor.

  1. 1

The University of Texas at Austin

Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (Online)

    School based in Texas

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #1: it charges $333 per credit (the lowest on this list), its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 89% (tied for the highest on this list), and its school awards about 174 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (more than 8 of 10 other programs on this list).

    GRE policy

The GRE question is settled before you apply: UT Austin's online programs don't require it, and scores count only if you choose to send them. Courses cost about $1,000 each, so the 30-credit degree lands near $10,000. They're asynchronous and instructor-paced. Pick it if your bachelor's is in computer science, engineering or math, since that's the background admission typically expects.

    Purdue University-Main Campus

Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (Online)

    School based in Indiana

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #2: it offers 2 concentrations and a capstone, and its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 83% (higher than 6 of 10 other programs on this list).

    GRE policy

Purdue says outright that neither the GRE nor the GMAT is needed, and the gate is a 3.0 GPA instead. Tuition is $950 per credit for 30 credits, so $28,500 wherever you live. Choose the AI and Machine Learning major if you can show programming and math coursework. The management major wants 24 months of work experience. A 3-credit capstone closes it out.

    Florida Atlantic University

Professional Master's Degree Program in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Florida

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #3: it is fully online with 4-week terms and it charges $800 per credit (lower than 3 of 4 other programs on this list).

    GRE policy

Florida Atlantic drops the GRE and keeps pricing simple. The flat $800 per credit-hour covers meals for Saturday campus classes, materials and graduation activities, so 30 credits come to $24,000. Four-week courses and evening, weekend or online formats suit a full-time job. The catch is prerequisites: calculus, statistics, programming and algorithm analysis are expected, plus a desirable 3.0 GPA in your last 60 credits.

    Boston University

Online Master of Science in Enterprise AI

    School based in Massachusetts

    • Fully Online
    • Live and Asynchronous
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #4: its school awards about 327 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the most on this list) and its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 89% (tied for the highest on this list).

    GRE policy

Boston University doesn't require the GRE or GMAT for Enterprise AI, and the 30 credits cost $25,000 over about 16 months. What separates it from the three same-priced Boston siblings is a single capstone that spans the whole program, proposal first and working prototype last. Weekly live sessions mean you need a steady schedule, and two zero-credit onboarding modules come before your first semester.

    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #5: its school awards about 327 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the most on this list) and its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 89% (tied for the highest on this list).

    GRE policy

Developers who want to skip entrance exams should look at Boston University's software engineering track. There's no GRE or GMAT, and the bill is $25,000 for 30 credits in 16 months. Admission accepts relevant coursework or work experience in computer science, software engineering, data science or engineering, so job history can count. Preparatory bootcamp work comes first, and a two-term capstone finishes the degree.

    University of Washington-Seattle Campus

Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Engineering

    School based in Washington

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #6: it offers 5 concentrations and a capstone, and its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 85% (higher than 7 of 10 other programs on this list).

    GRE policy

Admission here leans on your record, not a test. The GRE isn't required, but UW wants a 3.0 GPA, a resume, a statement of purpose and one recommendation letter. You collect two graduate certificates in steps, then finish a two-quarter capstone. Budget $40,375 to $43,088 for 2025-26, depending on the certificates you choose, and plan around one start a year. Students needing an I-20 can't enroll.

Why it ranks #7: it charges $875 per credit (lower than 2 of 4 other programs on this list) and it is fully online with 3 starts a year, but its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 66% (lower than 8 of 10 other programs on this list).

    GRE policy

Maryville gives you three start dates a year and asks for no GRE or GMAT. Tuition is 33 credits at $875, or $28,875, plus a $775 technology fee per semester that the total leaves out. Qualifying Maryville undergraduates can earn up to 12 credits toward it through Early Access. Taking two classes per term, you can finish in as few as 24 months.

  8. 8

    Saint Louis University

    Artificial Intelligence in Medicine

    School based in Missouri

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #8: its school awards about 157 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (more than 7 of 10 other programs on this list), and it offers an internship and a capstone.

    GRE policy

If you're a nurse, pharmacist or physician and entrance exams are the barrier, Saint Louis University asks only for an application, transcripts and a resume or CV. No GRE, and no computer science or advanced math background.

Coursework covers Large Language Models and Image Analysis, and you end with a capstone (AIM 5960) or a graduate internship (AIM 5910). It's tied to medicine, so a general software job needs a broader degree.

    University of Cincinnati-Main Campus

Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence Management

    School based in Ohio

    • Fully Online
    • Asynchronous
    • Public

Why it ranks #9: it is fully online and asynchronous with 16-week terms, and it offers 8 concentrations, but its price of $1,160 per credit is the highest on this list.

    GRE policy

Career changers with a non-technical degree have a real route here. Cincinnati accepts a bachelor's in any field with at least a B average, and the GRE isn't required. Cost runs $1,145 per credit for Ohio residents and $1,160 for everyone else, fees included. Finish in 12 months full time or about 36 part time. Credits from the AI in Business certificate transfer into the degree.

    University of Cincinnati-Main Campus

Master of Engineering in AI with Science and Engineering Applications

    School based in Ohio

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #10: it is fully online with 16-week terms and 3 starts a year, and it offers a capstone, but its school awards about 20 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the fewest on this list).

    GRE policy

Read this GRE rule closely. Cincinnati waives it only if your bachelor's is in computer science or engineering and your GPA is 3.0 or higher.

A lower GPA or a degree in another field means taking the exam, so it's a conditional fit for this list. In return you get three starts a year, a pace of as little as one year, and a capstone that builds new models and algorithms.

    University of Michigan-Dearborn

    Artificial Intelligence, MS

    School based in Michigan

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #11: it offers 4 concentrations and a thesis option, and it is fully online, but its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 58% (the lowest on this list).

    GRE policy

If you have a STEM bachelor's degree with a 3.0 GPA or better, Michigan-Dearborn makes the no-GRE route simple: the GRE isn't required, and neither are recommendation letters. You'll need prior programming, math and statistics coursework, though.

The degree is 30 credits and can be done fully online. Watch the cost: the posted $19,296 for Michigan residents and $32,272 for non-residents is a general graduate rate for 8 credits, not an online price.

Check What Replaces the GRE

Dropping the GRE usually shifts the weight onto your GPA, your prerequisite coursework and your resume. Four programs here ask for a 3.0 cumulative GPA: Florida Atlantic, Washington, Michigan-Dearborn and Purdue.

Most also want evidence you can handle the math. Purdue's AI and Machine Learning major asks for programming plus algorithms, calculus, linear algebra and probability. Florida Atlantic asks for calculus, statistics, programming and data structures. Washington adds a statement of purpose and a letter of recommendation, while Michigan-Dearborn doesn't require letters.

If your GPA is under 3.0, look at programs that don't state a GPA floor on the official page, such as Texas at Austin, and call admissions before you apply.

Pick Between Programs at the Same School

Two schools here have more than one program, and the names can mislead you. At Boston University, both master's degrees cost $25,000 for 30 credits and take about 16 months. Enterprise AI runs a capstone through all four semesters and starts with two required 0-credit onboarding modules. Software Engineering for AI asks for relevant computer science, software engineering, data science or engineering coursework, or work experience in those fields.

At Cincinnati, the AI Management degree accepts a bachelor's in any field with at least a B average. The Master of Engineering is the one with the conditional GRE waiver, so check that your degree and GPA fit before you count on it.

Compare the Real Total Cost

Total tuition runs from $10,000 at Texas at Austin to $28,875 at Maryville, which charges $875 for each of 33 credits and adds a $775 technology fee each semester. Purdue totals $28,500 at $950 per credit. Florida Atlantic totals $24,000 at a flat $800 per credit, and its fees also cover meals for on-campus Saturday classes.

Cincinnati's AI Management degree lists $1,160 per credit hour for non-residents, including fees. Washington's estimate is between $40,375 and $43,088 for 2025-26, depending on the certificates you choose. Michigan-Dearborn posts a general graduate rate, not an online price, so ask for the online figure before you compare it with the others.

Match the Degree to Your Background

If you already work in software, Boston University's Software Engineering for AI, Purdue's AI and Machine Learning major and Washington's engineering-focused degree fit best. If you manage people or projects, Purdue's AI Management and Policy major asks for at least 24 months of work experience, and Cincinnati's AI Management degree takes any bachelor's field.

If you work in healthcare, Saint Louis University is the one written for you. It asks for an application, transcripts and a resume or CV, and says you don't need a computer science or advanced math background. International students should note that Washington isn't open to F-1 or J-1 students who need an I-20.
