Method

How We Chose These Programs

We started with every online AI program on our list that charges by the credit, then sorted each level by the rate an out-of-state online student pays. Where a school charges residents less, we show that rate too.

We use the school's own tuition or program page, and we list totals as tuition only unless the school says fees are included. Prices change each term, so check the school's page before you apply.

The full scoring approach is on our methodology page.

  • A per-credit rate confirmed on the school's tuition or program page
  • Ranked by the rate a non-resident online student pays, then by our score
  • Mandatory fees are noted but not added to the rate

Scores are the weighted sum of five factors (Cost 30%, Outcomes 25%, Online Flexibility 20%, Program Depth 10%, Track Record 15%), version 1.0. The methodology page shows the rubric for each factor.

  1. 1

    Dakota State University

    Artificial Intelligence in Organizations, BS

    School based in South Dakota

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #1: it charges $373.80 per credit (tied for the lowest among bachelor's programs on this list) and its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 51%.

    Cost

This is a low-price bachelor's for students who want to manage and apply AI in a business setting. The sticker is $373.80 per credit for all 120 credits, so $44,856 total, with no separate in-state discount. The catch is that out-of-state students taking online computer science courses pay $491.50 per credit, so confirm which rate your courses carry.

    Dakota State University

    Artificial Intelligence, BS

    School based in South Dakota

    • Fully Online

Why it ranks #2: it charges $373.80 per credit (tied for the lowest among bachelor's programs on this list) and its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 51%, but its school awards 1 bachelor's degree a year in this field per IPEDS (the fewest among bachelor's programs on this list).

    Cost

Price-minded students who still want the technical version of this degree should start here. Every credit costs $373.80, so a full 120 credits is $44,856 at the standard rate. Sixteen-week terms and three starts a year keep it flexible. The watch-out is an extra $117.70 per credit delivery charge for non-residents on some online courses.

  3. 3

    Grand Canyon University

Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence (Online Option)

    School based in Arizona

    • Fully Online
    • Private for-profit

Why it ranks #3: it charges $490 per credit (lower than 2 of 4 other bachelor's programs on this list), and it is fully online with 7- and 15-week terms, but its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 43% (lower than 3 of 4 other bachelor's programs on this list).

    Cost

Think of this as the benchmark price to beat. Grand Canyon charges $490 per credit online, which makes $58,800 for 120 credits, and that is well above the public options. Pick it only if you value its format or need to start quickly. Otherwise the Dakota State and Maryland options above cost noticeably less for similar degrees.

  4. 4

    University of Maryland Global Campus

Online Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Maryland

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #4: its school awards about 81 bachelor's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (more than 3 of 4 other bachelor's programs on this list) and it offers a capstone, but its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 33% (the lowest among bachelor's programs on this list).

    Cost

Military families and Maryland residents get the best bachelor's deal here. In-state tuition is $337 per credit, or $40,440 for 120 credits, and service members pay $250 per credit. Up to 90 credits can transfer, so a long transcript could shrink the bill further. Everyone else pays $499 per credit, which is $59,880 and far less competitive.

    The University of Tennessee-Knoxville

Online Bachelor of Science in Applied Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Tennessee

    • Fully Online
    • Asynchronous
    • Public

Why it ranks #5: its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 74% (the highest among bachelor's programs on this list), but its price of $565 per credit is the highest among bachelor's programs on this list.

    Cost

Tennessee residents get a flagship-university degree at $490 per credit, about $58,800 over 120 credits. Out-of-state students pay $565, which is $67,800 and the top of this price range. Courses are asynchronous, so you can keep a full-time job. Budget for the full four years unless you bring in transfer credit, since the program is estimated at 48 months.

Master's

Online Master's Degrees Ranked

  1. 1

The University of Texas at Austin

Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (Online)

    School based in Texas

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #1: it charges $333 per credit (the lowest among master's programs on this list) and its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 89% (the highest among master's programs on this list).

    Cost

If total price is your only filter, this is the one to start with. The whole 30-credit degree costs $9,990, close to $10,000, which is far below the other master's here. GRE scores aren't required. You will need a technical bachelor's degree, usually computer science, engineering or math, so career changers should look at the other master's.

    Grand Canyon University

Online Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Arizona

    • Fully Online
    • Private for-profit

Why it ranks #2: it charges $610 per credit (lower than 13 of 14 other master's programs on this list) and it is fully online with 8-week terms.

    Cost

Grand Canyon's rate looks high at $610 per credit, yet it is the lowest per-credit master's price in this group. The catch is length. At 46 credits, the degree comes to $28,060 before fees, more than schools charging more per credit for 30. Transferring up to 12 credits trims it, so it suits people who already have graduate coursework.

    Capitol Technology University

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Maryland

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #3: it charges $665 per credit (lower than 11 of 14 other master's programs on this list), and it offers an internship and a thesis option.

    Cost

Capitol's MPhil charges $665 per credit, so 36 credits come to $23,940 before the $55 per credit technology fee. It's fully online with no residencies. Active-duty servicemembers pay $350 and retirees $550. Choose it if a research thesis and oral defense appeal to you, perhaps as a step toward a doctorate. Expect more writing and independent work than a course-only master's.

    Capitol Technology University

Master of Research (MRes) in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Maryland

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #4: it charges $665 per credit (lower than 11 of 14 other master's programs on this list) and it offers a thesis option.

    Cost

The MRes is the shorter and cheaper of Capitol's two research master's. At 30 credits and $665 each, tuition is $19,950, plus the $55 per credit technology fee. Active-duty servicemembers pay $350 per credit. It suits working professionals with an AI background who want doctoral preparation. The dissertation is the centerpiece, so it rewards self-directed people more than those wanting a structured course sequence.

    Florida Atlantic University

Professional Master's Degree Program in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Florida

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #5: it charges $800 per credit (lower than 10 of 14 other master's programs on this list) and it is fully online with 4-week terms.

    Cost

Florida Atlantic prices the degree as one flat figure per credit, $800, so 30 credits cost $24,000 with no residency tiers to decode. Fees cover course materials and Saturday-class meals too. Courses last four weeks and you finish in about 1.5 years, which means less time paying for months of enrollment. Expect to need calculus, statistics and programming already.

    West Virginia University

Online Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in West Virginia

    • Fully Online
    • Live and Asynchronous
    • Public

Why it ranks #6: it charges $805 per credit (lower than 9 of 14 other master's programs on this list) and it offers 2 concentrations, but its school awards 7 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the fewest among master's programs on this list).

    Cost

West Virginia lands in the middle of this price range at $805 per credit hour, or $24,150 over 30 credits, before fees. Eight-week courses and three starts a year help you move quickly through it, and the 12 to 36 month window lets you slow down if money gets tight. Saint Louis University

    Applied AI and Decision Analytics

    School based in Missouri

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #7: it charges $810 per credit (lower than 8 of 14 other master's programs on this list) and its school awards about 157 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (more than 10 of 12 other master's programs on this list).

    Cost

Career changers without a STEM degree can stay on budget here. Tuition is $810 per credit, so $24,300 for 30 credits, and it is a private Jesuit university rather than a public one. Saint Louis University says additional charges may apply, so ask for a written total. A research project replaces a thesis, which keeps the final stretch practical.

    Maryville University of Saint Louis

Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence

    School based in Missouri

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #8: it charges $875 per credit (lower than 7 of 14 other master's programs on this list), but its school awards about 72 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (fewer than 8 of 12 other master's programs on this list).

    Cost

The $875 credit rate is the reason Maryville lands on a price list, and 33 credits brings the sticker to $28,875. Add the $775 technology fee that Maryville charges every semester before you compare it with other quotes. It fits a price-watcher who also dislikes entrance exams, since neither the GRE nor the GMAT is needed. It's slower than some, at 24 months at best.

    University of Illinois Chicago

Online Master of Engineering with a Concentration in AI and Machine Learning

    School based in Illinois

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #9: it charges $896 per credit and it is fully online with 8-week terms, but its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 62% (lower than 9 of 14 other master's programs on this list).

    Cost

Public-university tuition of $32,256 buys nine courses here, and UIC says a student can finish in as few as 12 months. That speed matters for cost, because a shorter degree means fewer months of lost evenings and quicker return to your regular pay. It suits engineers who want a non-thesis credential. Expect the 36 credit hours at $896 each to be heavier than a 30-credit program.

    Purdue University-Main Campus

Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (Online)

    School based in Indiana

    • Fully Online

Why it ranks #10: it offers 2 concentrations and a capstone, and its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 83% (higher than 12 of 14 other master's programs on this list), but at $950 per credit it costs more than 9 of 14 other master's programs on this list.

    Cost

Residents and non-residents both pay $950 per credit at Purdue, so a 30-credit degree is $28,500 whether you live in Indiana or Idaho. Out-of-state students rarely get that kind of flat deal from a flagship. Choose it if you meet the admissions bar, which means a 3.0 GPA plus programming experience for the technical major or 24 months of work for the management major.

    Oregon State University

    Business Analytics and Applied AI

Why it ranks #11: it is fully online with 4 starts a year and its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 70% (higher than 10 of 14 other master's programs on this list), but at $965 per credit it costs more than 10 of 14 other master's programs on this list.

    Cost

Oregon State is on this list for what it lets you skip. Up to 22 of the 45 credits can come from the online Business Analytics certificate, so you can start small and apply that spending toward the master's. San Jose State University

MS in Artificial Intelligence (Special Session)

    School based in California

Why it ranks #13: its school awards about 376 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the most among master's programs on this list), but at $1,022 per credit it costs more than 12 of 14 other master's programs on this list.

    Pennsylvania State University-World Campus

Master of Artificial Intelligence, AI Engineering Option

    School based in Pennsylvania

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #14: it offers 2 concentrations and a capstone, and it is fully online with 12- and 15-week terms and 3 starts a year, but its price of $1,089 per credit is tied for the highest among master's programs on this list.

    Cost

Penn State's engineering option costs $32,670 in 2026-27, and the school says the 2027-28 rate is higher, so slow part-time pacing carries real price risk. The saving grace is the stackable path: up to three related graduate certificates can be earned along the way. That suits a budget-minded student who wants checkpoints and may stop early. Pace yourself to finish before the rate climbs.

    Cost

Both Penn State options carry the same sticker, but the Applied and Generative AI Option is the better buy if the tools matter more than the engineering. Tuition is $1,089 per credit, and $13,062 a semester at 12 or more credits. Taking 12 credits a semester is the flat charge, so plan around the 2027-28 increase.

Active-duty servicemembers pay $875 per credit and retirees $925, and full-time high school or community college staff get 20% off. Budget for the $55 per-credit technology fee on top. Capitol Technology University

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Machine Learning

    School based in Maryland

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit
    Cost

Cost-minded doctoral students should read the fine print here. Tuition is $58,800 for 60 credits at $980 each, but Capitol says credits can run past 60 if your research takes longer, and every credit carries the $55 technology fee. Finishing with three accepted journal articles instead of a thesis may help you control that. It suits working machine learning professionals.

Cost per credit is the published online rate; September 30, 2026 data. Scores use methodology version 1.0.

Read the Fine Print Before You Compare Prices

Two programs with the same per-credit rate can cost very different amounts once fees show up. Maryville lists $875 per credit for 33 credits, then adds a $775 technology fee each semester. The University of Bridgeport lists $1,100 per credit, plus a $25 per credit textbook fee.

Some schools fold fees into one number, which makes comparing easier. The University of Cincinnati's $1,160 out-of-state rate includes instructional, general, technology and distance learning fees. Florida Atlantic's flat $800 per credit-hour covers tuition, course materials and graduation activities.

Ask each school for a full cost sheet for your first year. Then compare totals, not rates. Per-credit prices also hide program length: Grand Canyon's master's needs 46 credits, while Texas at Austin needs 30.

Your Residency Can Change the Price

Most online master's programs here charge everyone the same rate. Purdue charges $950 per credit to Indiana residents and non-residents alike, and Oregon State adds no charge for non-residents.

A few schools do split the price. At the University of Maryland Global Campus, the bachelor's is $337 per credit in state and $499 out of state, and service members pay $250. At the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, it is $490 in state and $565 out of state. Wayne Community College's gap is the widest, $76 against $268.

Dakota State has a catch of its own. Out-of-state students taking online computer science courses pay $491.50 per credit, which adds $117.70 in delivery fees. Ask which rate your courses carry.

Where a Cheaper Degree Costs You Something Else

A low price often comes with a trade. Texas at Austin has the lowest master's rate, but it is a program built for people with a technical background, so check its admission requirements before you count on the savings. Wayne Community College is an associate degree, which is a different credential than a bachelor's or master's.

The two doctorates cost $980 per credit, and there is a discount to know about. Capitol Technology University charges $980 per credit plus a $55 per credit technology fee, with $875 for active-duty service members and $925 for retired members. High school and community college full-time faculty and staff get 20% off doctoral tuition.
