How We Chose These Programs
A program qualifies for this list only when the school's own pages state a part-time pace or schedule. We then rank by our overall score, which weighs cost, flexibility, admissions barriers, curriculum and accreditation, using figures taken from each school's official program and tuition pages.
We did not count a program just because it lets you enroll in fewer courses. You can read how every factor is weighted on our methodology page.
- A part-time option stated on the school's program or admissions page
- Typical completion time shown when the school publishes it
- Ranked by our program score within each degree level
Scores are the weighted sum of five factors (Cost 30%, Outcomes 25%, Online Flexibility 20%, Program Depth 10%, Track Record 15%), version 1.0. The methodology page shows the rubric for each factor.

What Part-Time Really Means in an Online AI Degree
Schools use the phrase differently, so read the fine print. NJIT defines part time as 9 or fewer credits per semester and recommends about 2 years. Cincinnati publishes a part-time plan of approximately 36 months against 12 months full time. Penn lists 3 years on its extended schedule and 16 months on the fastest one.
Duke is the odd one out. Its online option is built only for part-time students, with four semesters and two summer sessions. Boulder and Michigan-Dearborn state a part-time pace but don't print a single timeline, so ask admissions how many courses a working student usually takes at once.
Check the Bill Before You Slow Down
A longer schedule spreads the same tuition over more terms. It does not shrink it. Purdue lists $950 per credit for 30 credits, which is $28,500, and says the rate is the same for Indiana residents and non-residents. Georgetown is $1,752 per credit for a $52,560 total.
Per-credit rates can also change from year to year, and a slower pace means more years of exposure. Penn says tuition and fees may be adjusted yearly. NJIT lists $1,284 per credit for 30 credits, and fees are extra. Ask for the current fee schedule in writing.
Match the Program to Your Background
Admission rules split this list cleanly. Georgetown accepts a bachelor's degree in any field, and Cincinnati does too with at least a B average and no GRE (Graduate Record Examination) or GMAT. Boulder uses performance-based admission, where you pass a three-course pathway with a B or better in each course.
Penn wants an undergraduate degree in computer science or a related field. NJIT and Michigan-Dearborn ask for a STEM bachelor's degree with a 3.0 GPA, and Duke is designed for working professionals with a technical or scientific background. Purdue's technical major also expects prior algorithms, calculus, linear algebra and probability.
Ask About Pacing, Starts and Employer Support
Start dates matter more when you study slowly. Boulder starts courses six times a year in 8-week blocks, Georgetown and NJIT start three times a year, and Cincinnati starts twice a year, so a missed deadline can cost months. Ask each school what happens if you pause for a term, and whether employer tuition benefits can cover a program billed per course or per credit.
