Method

How We Chose These Programs

A program made this list when applied AI appears in its title, its program family or a named concentration, and when it is delivered online. We checked cost, credits and format against each school's own pages.

Then we scored every program with the same method used across the site: cost, graduation rate, online flexibility, depth and track record. Scores are compared within a degree level, and certificates are only compared with other certificates.

The full details are on the methodology page.

  • Applied AI in the program title, family or a named concentration
  • Delivered online, with cost, credits and format confirmed on the school's own pages
  • Ranked by our program score within each degree level; certificates are ranked only against other certificates

Scores are the weighted sum of five factors (Cost 30%, Outcomes 25%, Online Flexibility 20%, Program Depth 10%, Track Record 15%), version 1.0. The methodology page shows the rubric for each factor.

Know What Applied AI Means Before You Apply

Applied AI is about using existing models to get work done: forecasting demand, automating a decision, building a chatbot, or adding generative AI to a product. It sits between a business analytics degree and a research-heavy computer science degree.

The programs here show the range. Saint Louis University's M.S. is called Applied AI and Decision Analytics, and its capstone deploys and validates a real-world AI application. Oregon State's M.S. pairs business analytics with applied AI inside an AACSB-accredited College of Business. Cincinnati's AI Management degree has eight concentrations and certificate options, including Applied AI in Finance and Health Care Administration.

Penn State and Drexel lean more technical. Penn State splits its Master of Artificial Intelligence into an AI Engineering option and an Applied and Generative AI option, so check which one you're enrolling in. If you want to build models from scratch, compare these with our online machine learning degrees.

Check Your Background Against the Entry Rules

Applied AI programs attract people from business, health care and engineering, and their admissions rules reflect that.

Saint Louis University says no prior STEM degree is required and teaches the technical foundations inside the program. Cincinnati accepts a bachelor's in any field with at least a B average, a resume, a goal statement and one letter of recommendation.

Northeastern's standard degree expects a degree in engineering or computer technology, or statistics coursework. Applicants without that background are directed to the Connect version, which adds nine credits of skill-building courses and lists tuition of $71,079.

Drexel is stricter. It requires a strong computer science background, with its Graduate Certificate in Computer Science as an entry point. Brandeis asks for basic statistics and probability plus foundational Python or R. If you are coming from another field, our list for career changers goes deeper on prerequisites.

Use a Certificate to Test the Field First

Three certificates are on this list, and each one costs far less than a master's. 5 credits and has three pathways, one of them with no coding required. Saint Louis University's post-baccalaureate certificate is nine credits at $810 per credit, drawn from the master's curriculum.

Brandeis's Applied Machine Learning and Engineering certificate is 12 credits at $1,220 per credit, or $14,640, and can be finished in a year or less.

The credits don't have to go to waste. Rochester says its credits can apply toward Simon's online M.S. in Business Analytics and Applied AI. Brandeis credits can apply toward its online M.S. in Applied Data Science and Decision Analytics or M.S. in Applied Leadership. Oregon State lets up to 22 credits from its business analytics certificate transfer into the master's.

Confirm the transfer rules in writing before you pay for the first course. For more options, see our online AI certificate programs.

Compare Total Cost, Not Just the Per-Credit Price

Credit counts and credit types change the final bill, so multiply before you compare.

Saint Louis University charges $810 per credit for 30 credits, which makes $24,300. San Diego charges $995 per unit for 30 units, or $29,850, tuition only. Northeastern's standard degree lists an estimated $30,500 for academic year 2026-2027.

Cincinnati is $1,160 per credit for non-residents and $1,145 for Ohio residents, across 30 credits. Penn State is $1,089 per credit for 30 credits at the 2026-27 rate, and it notes the 2027-28 rate is higher.

Oregon State charges $965 per credit but requires 45 credits. Drexel charges $1,400 per quarter credit for 45 credits, which totals $63,000 before fees.

At the bachelor's level, Tennessee charges $565 per credit out of state and $490 in state, for a 120-credit degree. Fees come on top at most schools, so ask for a full cost sheet.
