How We Chose These Programs
A program makes this list when machine learning appears in its title, its program family or a named concentration, and when it's delivered online. We then rank every program on one shared method, inside its own degree level, looking at cost per credit, graduation rate, online flexibility, program depth and track record.
Several programs are close together, so use the card notes to separate them. The details are on the methodology page.
- Machine learning in the program title, family or a named concentration

Match the Degree Title to the Work You Want
A machine learning degree can mean three different things on this list, and the label matters more than people expect.
George Washington, Drexel, Washington, UIC, Western Governors and Capitol put machine learning in the title. At Purdue, West Virginia, North Texas and Michigan-Dearborn it is a major or concentration inside a broader AI degree, so your transcript will say artificial intelligence. Northeastern's Applied AI degree is a professional master's built around applying models inside a field, with concentrations such as Machine Learning for Cybersecurity.
Credential type matters too. UIC awards a Master of Engineering, which fits leading technical projects. Western Governors awards a Master of Science in Computer Science with an AI and machine learning specialization. Check that the title on the diploma is one your target employer or doctoral program will recognize.
Check the Math and Programming Requirements First
Machine learning programs are stricter about preparation than general AI programs, and the requirements are easy to find on each school's page.
Purdue's ML major requires programming experience and coursework in algorithms, calculus, linear algebra and probability, plus a 3.0 GPA. Michigan-Dearborn wants a STEM bachelor's, a 3.0 or higher and prior programming, mathematics and statistics. West Virginia expects a computer science or related degree at 3.0, and other fields may be considered provisionally with a year of AI or ML experience.
Drexel requires a strong computer science background, and its Graduate Certificate in Computer Science can serve as an entry point. Northeastern directs applicants without the required statistics to its Connect version, which is a separate program. If your math is rusty, fix that before you pay application fees.
Compare Total Cost, Not the Per-Credit Rate
Per-credit prices are not comparable across this list because the credits aren't the same size.
Drexel's $1,400 is a quarter-credit price, and 45 quarter credits come to $63,000. Its semester-credit equivalent is $2,100. Western Governors charges $4,385 per six-month term instead of per credit, so a faster finish costs less. Washington publishes a 2025-26 estimate of $40,375 to $43,088 depending on the certificates you choose, with capstone credits at $1,030 each.
Michigan-Dearborn lists general graduate rates, not an online price, so ask the school what you'd actually pay. North Texas estimates its figure for Texas residents and says the total varies by residency. Compare the full-program number, then add fees, which most schools list separately.
Choose a Doctorate Only if You Want to Do Research
Capitol's Ph.D. in Machine Learning is the one doctorate on the list. It costs $980 per credit across 60 credits, plus a $55 per-credit technology fee, and credits can run past 60 if your dissertation or publication work takes longer. Active-duty students pay $875 per credit and retired servicemembers $925.
It is designed for current or experienced professionals in machine learning, AI, computer science or data analytics. Courses such as MCL 810 Machine Learning Research Methodologies show the focus is on producing research. If you mainly want to build and deploy models at work, one of the master's degrees above gets you there faster and for far less money.
