Verdict
Our Verdict on the Graduate Certificate
Carnegie Mellon's Online Graduate Certificate in Software Engineering With AI is the cheapest Carnegie Mellon credential on our list. It is two courses at $7,080 each, $14,160 in total, and it asks for a computer science or engineering degree. It fits working engineers who want two focused courses, not a full master's.
Carnegie Mellon University is a private nonprofit university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a 94% graduation rate and a 12% admit rate. This certificate is delivered fully online and has two courses: ML in Production and AI Tools for Software Development.
The format is mixed asynchronous and synchronous.
The graduation and admit rates describe the whole university, not just this certificate.
Online
The Online Format
Live, online classes meet weekly with CMU faculty after work hours for interactive discussion, problem solving and collaborative learning. Self-paced activities fill out the rest of the week.
For a working engineer that's a workable rhythm, since evenings are easier to protect than a daytime schedule. It does mean you can't catch up at 2 a.m. on a weekend and skip the live meeting.
Ask whether you can take the two courses back to back, because that affects how many semesters of technology fees you pay.

Fit
Who Should Apply, and Who Should Not
Who It Fits
- Practicing software engineers. The focus is on running machine learning systems and using AI in daily development work.
- Professionals who can join live classes. They meet weekly after work hours with CMU faculty, with self-paced activities as well.
- Engineers who want a Carnegie Mellon credential at a lower total than the school's longer certificates.
Who Should Skip It
- Career changers. Admission asks for a bachelor's degree in computer science or an engineering-related discipline with coursework in mathematics or statistics, data structures and algorithms.
- Managers who want AI strategy. Carnegie Mellon's Managing AI Systems certificate is built for them and asks for five years of professional experience instead of coursework.
- Anyone who wants a deeper machine learning sequence. Carnegie Mellon's Machine Learning and Data Science certificate has five courses and costs $25,452.
Curriculum
What You Will Study
The two courses split the job. ML in Production covers running machine learning systems after the model is built, which is where many teams get stuck. AI Tools for Software Development covers using AI in your daily engineering work.
That makes this a practical certificate, not a theory one. You won't get a survey of every machine learning method.
Two courses is narrow. The admissions note says applicants need coursework in mathematics or statistics, data structures and algorithms, so the program assumes you can already write and read serious code and puts its time into production and tooling.
If you want deeper modeling, Carnegie Mellon's AI Engineering Fundamentals certificate covers Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence for Engineers and Introduction to Deep Learning for $16,968.

Cost
Tuition and Fees
Two courses at $7,080 each add up to $14,160. A $245 technology fee is assessed each semester and is subject to change, so add it to your budget, and count the semesters you'll be enrolled.
Brandeis's Software Engineering with Artificial Intelligence certificate totals $14,640 for four courses, and its credits can count toward a master's. Carnegie Mellon's price is close but covers half the course count, so you're paying for the name and for live faculty sessions.
The other Carnegie Mellon technical certificates cost more: AI Engineering Fundamentals is $16,968 and Generative AI and Large Language Models is $25,452.

Trade-Offs
Drawbacks to Weigh
- Two courses is a narrow slice. Ask whether anything transfers toward a degree.
- The technology fee and the live class schedule both add cost and rigidity that self-paced certificates avoid.
- You need a computer science or engineering-related degree to apply, which rules out many career changers.
