The AIGP is the Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional certification from IAPP, and it’s about governing AI responsibly, not building it. The exam costs $799 for non-members and $649 for IAPP members. It has 100 questions, runs 2.75 hours with a 15-minute break, and needs a score of 300 on a 100 to 500 scale. No degree or prior certification is required to register.

What Is the AIGP Certification?

AIGP stands for Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional. IAPP, the organization that runs it, is best known for privacy credentials. The AIGP extends that world to AI: how an organization sets rules, manages risk and makes decisions about the AI it builds, buys and uses.

Think of the difference between building a car and writing the safety policy for a fleet. An AI engineer builds the system. A governance professional helps decide how it’s allowed to be used, who reviews it and what happens when something goes wrong.

That makes the AIGP a different kind of credential from the engineering exams people usually compare it to. It’s closer to a policy and compliance credential with AI as its subject.

Who Is the AIGP For?

It fits people who work around AI more than inside its code. Four groups come up most often.

Business and operations leaders who approve or oversee AI projects and need to ask good questions about them.

Compliance, privacy and legal professionals who are being handed AI risk as part of their job.

Healthcare administrators and staff who deal with AI tools touching patient work and have to think about oversight.

Policy and risk people who write the rules an organization follows.

If you want to be the person training models, the AIGP isn’t your exam. If you want to be the person making sure models are used responsibly, it may be.

The member discount is $150. IAPP membership costs $295 annually, so if you’re only taking the exam once, the numbers don’t favor joining just for the discount. If you’ll keep renewing, membership starts to make sense, since it also covers the renewal fee.

What Does the Exam Cover?

The exam is built on the AIGP body of knowledge, which is IAPP’s outline of what a governance professional should know. IAPP publishes it, and you should read it first. It tells you what counts, so you don’t spend weeks on topics the exam doesn’t test.

IAPP revises the body of knowledge, and the current version is the one that matters. Open the AIGP certification page and read the outline from the top.

As you read it, sort each topic into three buckets: already know it, partly know it and brand new. A person from a privacy background will sort differently than someone from a technology background.

How Do You Prepare?

IAPP says no one paid resource is required to pass. That’s worth reading carefully. It means you aren’t forced to buy a particular course or book. It doesn’t mean the exam is easy, or that you can skip studying.

A sensible plan:

  1. Read the body of knowledge and sort topics by how familiar they are.
  2. Study the brand-new topics first, using IAPP’s free materials and anything else you trust.
  3. Tie each topic to a real situation at your workplace.
  4. Take practice questions near the end to learn the pace.
  5. Book the exam when you pass practice sets with room to spare.

You have one year from purchase to complete the exam, so you can buy when it suits your budget and take it when you’re ready. Don’t let that window lapse.

What Does AI Governance Work Look Like?

Governance is the unglamorous side of AI, and it’s where a lot of organizations feel the strain. Someone has to decide which AI tools a company may use, who signs off before a tool goes live and how decisions get recorded. Someone has to ask what happens when a tool produces a bad result.

A person with the AIGP isn’t expected to write code. They’re expected to know the questions to ask and the practices that make answers trustworthy. That might mean reviewing a vendor’s AI product before purchase, helping a team document how a model is used, or advising leadership on risk.

If that sounds like a job you’d like, the credential gives you shared vocabulary with others in the field. If it doesn’t, you’ve learned something useful before spending $649 or $799.

How Does It Compare With Technical AI Credentials?

The AIGP and a vendor exam like the Databricks ML Associate point in opposite directions. One is about managing AI. The other is about building it.

The same split shows up in security. CompTIA’s SecAI+ covers AI inside cybersecurity, and one of its four exam areas is AI governance, risk and compliance. The AIGP goes deeper on that single theme, while SecAI+ spreads across security work.

So how do you choose? Ask what you’ll do on Monday morning. If it’s reviewing, advising or setting rules, the AIGP is the match. If it’s building models, look at a machine learning certification. If it’s defending systems, you want a security one.

A Six-Week Study Schedule You Can Adjust

Plans vary, and your background changes the pace. Here’s a frame you can bend.

Weeks one and two. Read the body of knowledge. Sort topics into known, partly known and new. Start on the new ones.

Weeks three and four. Work through the rest. Write a short summary of each topic in your own words. If you can’t explain it simply, you haven’t got it yet.

Week five. Take practice questions and review every miss. Look for patterns, such as a topic you keep getting wrong.

Week six. Take a full-length practice run in one sitting so the 2.75-hour length feels normal. Then book the exam.

Because the exam runs 2.75 hours with a 15-minute break, stamina counts. Practice sitting that long.

Questions to Ask Your Employer

Before paying, check whether your workplace will cover the cost. A short conversation can save you hundreds of dollars.

  • Does the company have a training or certification budget, and does the AIGP qualify?
  • Is anyone else on the team pursuing it? A study partner helps.
  • Will the company cover renewal costs, including IAPP membership?
  • Will your role change if you earn it, such as taking on AI review work?

Employers who are starting to use AI often want one person who understands the rules. If that could be you, say so.

How Do You Renew the AIGP?

The certification term is two years, beginning the day after you pass. To renew, you submit evidence of 20 continuing education credits that correspond to the AIGP body of knowledge. You also pay a certification maintenance fee of $250, or you can become an IAPP member for $295 annually, which covers it.

Credits earned from things you’d do anyway, like attending relevant training or events, can count if they match the body of knowledge. Keep records as you go, so renewal isn’t a scramble in month 23.

How Does the AIGP Relate to an AI Degree?

The AIGP is narrow on purpose. It teaches governance. A degree teaches a field. Neither replaces the other, and the strongest candidates often have both.

If you want a degree that pairs with governance work, these lists fit best:

If you worry a degree means a lot of coding, read our guide on an AI degree without coding. Many business-focused programs lean on concepts and decisions more than programming.

Why combine them? A degree helps you understand what the AI is doing. The certification shows you know the rules and practices for governing it. Employers hiring for oversight roles can value both signals.

What Jobs Can It Help With?

The AIGP doesn’t map to one job title the way an engineering credential might. It supports roles where AI oversight is part of the work, such as compliance, privacy, risk, policy and management positions.

On our site, these pages are the nearest:

  • AI jobs gives the wider view of roles in the field, including ones that don’t involve writing code.
  • Information security analyst work overlaps with governance, since both deal with risk and controls around systems.

Be careful about promises here. Governance job titles vary a lot between organizations. Search the postings you care about, look for the AIGP or similar wording, and see how often it appears in the roles you want.

Is the AIGP Worth the Cost?

At $649 to $799, it’s more than most vendor exams, so decide with your goal in mind. It’s worth considering if your current or target role involves overseeing AI, and especially if your employer might pay for it.

It’s harder to justify if your goal is to build AI systems. In that case, a technical credential or a degree in machine learning does more for you.

Ask your employer about training budgets before you pay out of pocket. Many organizations cover professional certifications that relate to the job you already do.

Making the Most of a Certification Once You Have It

Passing the exam is the start. Use it. Add the credential to your resume and professional profile, and tell your manager. If your organization is wrestling with AI policy, offer to help draft or review something small, such as a checklist for evaluating a new AI tool.

Practical use is what turns a certification into experience. A short, real piece of governance work you can describe in an interview does more for you than the letters after your name.

Keep learning, too. AI rules and expectations change often, and the renewal requirement of 20 continuing education credits pushes you to keep up. Treat it as a habit, not a chore.
