How We Chose These Programs
We listed every online AI degree program from a school based in Massachusetts that we could verify on the school's own pages, then compared each on cost, graduation rate, online flexibility, program depth and track record. Boston University's four master's share the same school figures, so the notes explain how they differ. Read the full methodology for how we compare programs.

- In-state rate shown when the school publishes one
- Scored on the same five factors as every list and ranked inside its degree level
Scores are the weighted sum of five factors (Cost 30%, Outcomes 25%, Online Flexibility 20%, Program Depth 10%, Track Record 15%), version 1.0. The methodology page shows the rubric for each factor.

Why it ranks #1: its published tuition is $25,000 (tied for the lowest on this list) and its school awards about 327 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS.
In-State FactsSomeone who wants a single big project to show an employer will like this BU option. The capstone starts in semester one and carries through all four, ending in a prototype. Tuition is $25,000 for 30 credits, with no GRE required, and the next session listed is Fall 2026. Budget time for the two zero-credit onboarding modules that come first.

In-State FactsCareer changers aiming for hands-on AI engineering roles should start with BU's computer science version. A Computer Science Bootcamp runs two weeks before your first semester, so you aren't expected to arrive fluent. The 30 credits cost $25,000 over 16 months, and the CX 699 capstone closes it out. Mixed live and recorded classes mean some fixed meeting times.

Why it ranks #5: its published tuition is $25,000 (tied for the lowest on this list) and its school awards about 327 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS.
In-State FactsWorking developers in Massachusetts who want to ship AI features should compare this against BU's other three $25,000 master's. Admission looks for coursework or work experience in computer science, software engineering, data science or engineering, and the GRE isn't required. The two-term capstone follows 30 credits over 16 months. BU notes most students study part time after bootcamp prep, so expect long weeks.

Why it ranks #6: its school's IPEDS graduation rate is 91% (the highest on this list) and it offers 3 concentrations, but its school awards about 58 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the fewest on this list).
In-State FactsMassachusetts residents with an engineering or computer technology degree, or statistics coursework, get the cheaper of Northeastern's two Applied AI doors here. The $30,500 estimate for 2026-2027 excludes fees, and you can finish in 12 months or stretch to 20. Fall and Spring entry keeps the wait short. How to Choose Among Boston University's Four AI Master's
Boston University's four online AI master's look alike on price, but they train for different jobs. Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, Enterprise AI, and Software Engineering for Artificial Intelligence each cost $25,000 and run 30 credits over about 16 months. Choose by the work you want to do afterward.
AI in Business is $25,000 for 32 credits and states that no coding background is required. It is built for people who lead AI projects, workflows and governance rather than build models.
The Ed.M. in AI and Education is $30,000 for 30 credits and ends with a research-to-practice capstone, so it fits teachers and training staff.
Boston University's software engineering page asks for relevant coursework in computer science, software engineering, data science or engineering, or work experience in those fields. Check each program's own admissions page before you apply.
Northeastern's Two Doors Into Applied AI
Northeastern splits its online Applied AI master's by background. The standard program lists an estimated $30,500 in tuition for Academic Year 2026-2027, excluding fees, with Fall and Spring entry and a 12 to 20 month range. It expects a degree in engineering or computer technology, or coursework in place of statistics.
If you don't have that background, Northeastern directs you to the Connect version. It adds nine semester hours of credit first and lists an estimated $71,079, over two times the standard price, across 12 to 24 months.
Before you pay for Connect, ask whether a single statistics course could qualify you for the standard program. That question could save you a large amount of money.
What to Check Before You Apply in Massachusetts
Start with total cost, because the sticker prices on this page are estimates tied to the school's own pages. Northeastern says its figures exclude fees and other expenses, and Boston University lists total tuition only. Ask each admissions office for a current fee schedule.
Next, check timing. Boston University's Enterprise AI page lists the next session as Fall 2026 and includes two required zero-credit onboarding modules before the first semester. The computer science version starts with a Computer Science Bootcamp two weeks before classes.
Finally, look at format. Boston University's AI in Business, Computer Science and Enterprise AI programs mix live online sessions with work on your own schedule, so expect some fixed meeting times.
