Verdict
Our Verdict on the Graduate Certificate
This is the non-technical way into AI at Purdue. It's a 9-credit, four-course graduate certificate that's fully online and asynchronous, and it leans toward how AI affects society, policy and ethics instead of coding. It's a good fit if you need to understand AI at work and don't need to build it. Purdue also runs a 12-credit technical sibling that expects Python.
Purdue University's main campus in West Lafayette, Indiana, offers this Graduate Certificate in Foundations of Artificial Intelligence online. Purdue says it teaches core AI competencies in less time than a master's degree, and the page promises 100% online courses.
You finish in 9 credit hours across four courses. Purdue says credits earned here can be applied to its Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence, though you should ask an enrollment counselor for specifics.
Purdue has a second certificate on this site, Foundations in AI for Technical Professionals. It's longer, at 12 credits and five courses, and it's built for people with programming and math backgrounds. This one is the broader, lighter option.
Online
How the Online Classes Work
Purdue describes the courses as 100% online and asynchronous, so you study at your own pace. The page also mentions opportunities for live engagement through office hours and seminars, which gives you a way to ask questions in real time without making attendance mandatory.
The workload is four short courses, two of them small (1 and 2 credits). That's a light structure for a working adult.
The page doesn't spell out term lengths or how many times a year you can start, so ask both questions before applying if timing matters to you.

Fit
Who Should Apply, and Who Should Not
Who It Fits
- You manage people, products or policy and need to talk about AI with some authority, without writing code yourself.
- You have a bachelor's degree and a 3.0 GPA or equivalent, and you want a graduate credential that doesn't require the GRE or GMAT.
- You might want Purdue's master's in AI later. Purdue says certificate credits can apply to it, so this works as a trial run.
- You want asynchronous classes with the option of live office hours and seminars.
Who Should Skip It
- You want to build and train models. The technical sibling, with its machine learning and data mining courses, is the better Purdue match.
- You need a firm start schedule before you apply, so ask Purdue for upcoming start dates.
- You want a credential with program-level accreditation. We have none on file for this certificate.
Curriculum
What You Will Study
Three courses are required. GRAD50200 Interdisciplinary AI Fundamentals: Bridging Knowledge is 1 credit. SCLA52100 Social Impacts of AI is 3 credits, and SCLA52200 Artificial Intelligence Policy, Governance, and Ethics is 3 credits.
You then choose one selective course. GRAD50300 AI Essentials: A Non-Technical Introduction is 2 credits, and GRAD50400 Advanced AI Fundamentals for Technical Professionals is also 2 credits. That adds up to 9 credits.
Two of your three required courses focus on society, policy and ethics. That tells you what the certificate is built to do: help you reason about AI's effects and rules, not implement systems.

Cost
How Much It Costs at $950 a Credit
Purdue lists $950 per credit hour for Indiana residents and non-residents alike. At 9 credits, that's $8,550 in tuition.
One wrinkle worth knowing: Purdue's programs listing shows a different, lower per-credit figure, but the certificate's own page shows $950, and that's the number we used. Confirm the current rate with an enrollment counselor in writing before you budget, since the two pages disagree.
There's no residency discount to chase here, which keeps planning simple. Ask what fees apply on top of tuition.

Credentials
Accreditation and Where It Leads
You earn a graduate certificate from Purdue University. Admission asks for a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or equivalent, a professional resume and official transcripts from every university you attended, including transfer credits. Purdue says the GRE or GMAT isn't required.
The stacking promise matters more than the certificate itself for many people. Purdue says credits earned here can be applied to its Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence. It doesn't say how many, so get the number in writing.

Trade-Offs
Drawbacks to Weigh
- At $950 per credit, the $8,550 total isn't cheap for a certificate that's mostly conceptual.
- The curriculum is light on technical skills, so it won't qualify you for engineering roles on its own.
- The 3.0 GPA requirement could rule out some applicants.
- Purdue's own listings disagree on the per-credit rate, so verify the price directly.
- We have no program-level accreditation or start-date information on file.
