Verdict
Our Verdict on the Graduate Certificate
This is Purdue's hands-on AI certificate for people who can already code. It's 12 credits across five courses, fully online and asynchronous, and it assumes Python, linear algebra, multivariable calculus and statistics. If you have that background, it gives you real machine learning and data mining coursework at a clear price. If you don't, Purdue's other foundations certificate is the gentler start.
Purdue University's main campus in West Lafayette, Indiana, offers the Graduate Certificate in Foundations in AI for Technical Professionals online. Purdue describes it as a fast, focused way to build core AI competencies without a full master's commitment.
The program is 12 credit hours and five courses, all 100% online. Purdue says credits can be applied to its Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence, and it asks you to contact an enrollment counselor for specifics.
The sibling certificate, Foundations of Artificial Intelligence, is 9 credits and four courses with a focus on ethics, policy and social impact. This one swaps that for machine learning and data mining.
Online
The Online Format
Purdue says the classes are 100% online and asynchronous, so you set your own pace, and it offers office hours and seminars if you want live contact.
For a technical program, the live sessions are worth asking about. Machine learning coursework tends to raise questions that are easier to answer in conversation, and the page says those opportunities exist without requiring attendance.
Ask how long terms run and how many starts there are each year if timing matters. About 12 months is a typical length, which you should confirm.

Fit
Who Should Apply, and Who Should Not
Who It Fits
- You're a software engineer, data analyst or engineer who can already write Python and want formal machine learning coursework.
- You have the math. Purdue lists a strong foundation in linear algebra, multivariable calculus and probability and statistics as prerequisite knowledge.
- You may go on to Purdue's master's in AI. Credits can be applied to it, which makes this a lower-risk way to start.
- You want to skip the GRE. Purdue says the GRE or GMAT isn't required.
Who Should Skip It
- You don't program. Purdue lists Python proficiency as a prerequisite, and the courses build on it from day one.
- You want a policy or ethics emphasis. That's the other Purdue certificate, which has two required courses on social impact and governance.
- You want the cheapest route into AI. At $950 per credit this runs $11,400, well above some certificates on this site.
Curriculum
What You Will Study
Four courses are required. GRAD50200 Interdisciplinary AI Fundamentals: Bridging Knowledge is 1 credit. GRAD50400 Advanced AI Fundamentals for Technical Professionals is 2 credits. ECE50024 Machine Learning and ECE50836 Introduction to Data Mining are 3 credits each.
You also pick one selective course worth 3 credits: GRAD50600 Big Data Tools and Technologies, or GRAD50900 Applied Machine Learning: From Foundations to Latest Advances. All together that makes 12 credits.
Purdue says the program builds on your prior knowledge of Python, algorithms and software engineering so you can design, implement and evaluate AI systems.

Credentials
Accreditation and Where It Leads
The credential is a graduate certificate from Purdue University. Applicants need an accredited bachelor's degree, a 3.0 cumulative GPA or equivalent, a professional resume and official transcripts from every school attended.
Purdue lists prerequisite knowledge separately: Python proficiency, linear algebra, multivariable calculus, probability and statistics, familiarity with data structures and algorithms, and core software engineering principles. That's a real bar, and the admissions team can tell you how strictly they apply it.

Drawbacks to Weigh
- The prerequisite list is long, and career changers without coding experience will struggle to meet it.
- At $11,400 in tuition, it costs more than the 9-credit Purdue sibling.
- Two Purdue pages show different per-credit rates, so get the price confirmed in writing.
- A 3.0 GPA minimum may exclude some applicants.
- We have no start-date schedule or program-level accreditation on file.
